Cosmetic Fillings and Crowns

To begin your treatment, the first step is to check whether you are eligible. Your dentist will assess your eligibility during the consultation visit.

Cosmetic fillings

Placing white fillings in front teeth used to be picking a single shade of the filling and placing it in the cavity.  Whilst sometimes they blended well the results were often disappointing.  The fillings did not match, and they stained easily and discoloured.  Modern white fillings are placed using two or three shades to build the filling in layers.  This mimics the actual structure of the tooth and so produces a more aesthetic result.  Modern white fillings have a smoother finish and are less prone to staining and do not discolour as easily.

Cosmetic bonding is using white fillings to correct small defects such as slight chips and close small gaps between your teeth. A white filling with a specific colour to match is applied to your tooth surfaces and sculpted into the desired shape

Cosmetic crowns and veneers

Older crowns used on front teeth generally were made from porcelain with a metal core. These crowns often showed a black margin where the metal shows through and had a dull lifeless appearance as light could not pass through the metal core.  Modern crowns for front teeth are made entirely of a strong porcelain which does not have a metal core and have a more translucent natural appearance as light can pass through the crown.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that fit over the front surfaces of your teeth.  The beauty of veneers is that they can be fabricated to any size and shape with surface characteristics that make them look natural and fit in with your surrounding teeth.
The shade matching for crowns and veneers is done accurately, often using photographs to help the technician produce a natural looking crown.

Crowns and veneers can be used to correct several problems including:

  • Covering discoloured teeth,

  • Repairing badly worn, chipped or fractured teeth

  • Making slightly crooked teeth look straighter

  • Closing gaps between your teeth

  • Transforming your smile with a smile makeover
